Hey everyone!
The month of April and the first two weeks of May really flew by for me and Jaimee Joye. On top of our normal routine of language study and ministry, these last six weeks have been packed with "extra curricular" activities. In mid-April Jaimee and I had the opportunity to visit Odessa, in south-western Ukraine (about 13 train hours away), one of the great cities of Europe. Odessa is the home town of our very own Sergei Pavlov and he invited us to go with him and meet his family and friends. We had a great time as we saw the sights of Odessa, walked on California-like beaches, and experienced a new level of cultural immersion as Sergei's family and friends warmly took us into their lives for a week. (see pictures to the lower left)
To further help time pass as rapidly as possible, the beginning of May is packed with holidays starting with "May Day" (something like Labor Day) on the first of May. From there one can look forward to Victory Day, on May 9th, celebrating the defeat of Fascism and the end of World War Two. You may recall by now that Sevastopol is the home base of the Russian Black Sea Fleet (the original and almost sole purpose of this city's existence) and things would just not be complete without celebrating Fleet Day on May 13th. (see pictures to the lower left)
Not only do these holidays and the parades, concerts, fireworks displays and demonstrations associated with them break up the routine here in Sevastopol, but each one was an opportunity to have some fun "family" outings with our kids. We had several bonfires at the beach, went to the Russian Navy ship parade in the harbor, and watched a huge fireworks display together. We are now about to cross over into the summer months and are looking forward to spending more time outdoors with the kids as well as anticipating the arrival of mission teams from the United States.

What We Are Believing God For

|
Well, to be perfectly honest money has been tight ever since we returned from the States. We've always had enough to eat (Praise God for that) but never quite enough to do everything we desire for the kids. It just hasn't seemed like God's promises of abundance and prosperity are manifesting themselves to the fullest in our lives. So, we decided to pursue God very seriously concerning the issue so that our every ministry decision (like should we help Nastia and Andrei with extra groceries this month) doesn't have to be based on "Well, do we have any money to do that?" We decided to start believing God for something very basic and very essential: Our monthly support. Our monthly expenses are $2000. We have enough faith to believe that God will give us $2000 worth of AUTOMATIC MONTHLY WITHDRAWL SUPPORT so that, anything extra that comes in, can go towards special projects. Will you please agree with us that God will bring this to pass quickly. We would also like to ask you to consider signing up for automatic monthly withdrawl support EVEN if it's only $5 each month. (What might feel silly, stupid, or embarrassing for you, means a lot for us). For us, every consistent dollar makes a significant difference. We're so thankful that we've made it this far and we believe that things are only going to get better.
Next in line behind our need for increased consistent monthly support is our need for a means of motorized transportation. With the summer months already upon us we are praying and believing for a nice 2-seater moped. Mopeds require no insurance or registration (a real process in Ukraine) and will be a very convenient and economical way to avoid the summer tourist rush on our beautiful seaside city. The price of a decent new moped will be about $2000. Please believe with us for the Lord's provision! |

Kid Update

|
|
It has been an interesting month with the kids. We have been reminded that "our battle is not against flesh and blood but against the principalities of the air." It is very clear that there is a battle in the spirit for each of these precious lives.
Anya and Vanya are like faithful little puppies following our every move. We are so excited about their faithfulness to us and their apparent hunger for the Lord. We began discipling them with Bible Basics for Every Believer. After our first lesson it was clear that they have a greater knowledge of who God is than we thought. Since their faithfulness seems to be on a greater level than the others, we have arranged a separate meeting time and place for them. We believe this individual attention will enable them to discuss freely what is on their heart and to make great strides in their spiritual maturity.
Nastia has been like the weather this month, very unpredictable. She will go missing for several weeks at a time and then pop up again. We feel that this is her defense mechanism. Her fear of being abandoned yet again keeps her at a "safe" distance so that she does not become too dependent on our love and friendship.
Andrei has been in touch with us by phone but has not spent time with us in about three weeks. We know that the devil is doing his best to keep Andrei away from us. This is such a crucial time in his life since he has just surrendered his life to the Lord. Satan is making every attempt to uproot and destroy the seed that has been planted in this young man's heart.
Ksusha is still MIA. No one claims to know where she is. We have no idea what caused her to run away from the orphanage. The last time we saw her she wanted us to pray for her to be able to quit smoking. We asked her if she had ever surrounded her life to Christ and explained how this would be helpful. She is/was on the verge of a major route change for the better. It would not be surprising if her sudden disappearance is simply a desperate attempt of the devil to keep her from crossing over. She is very intelligent, has big dreams, and would be unstoppable for God's Kingdom.
Please Pray with us for their safety and strength to make the right decisions. We need the Holy Spirit to do a work in their hearts and for the plot of the enemy to be destroyed. These aren't just random people, these are God's children and young people we have really grown to care for and love. There is no doubt in our minds that God will use them in very powerful and significant ways, but the fight for their lives is great and can only be won through prayer.

Andy's Birthday |
|

Well, I have officially reached the Quarter Century mark! On May 8th I celebrated my 25th birthday. Despite being far from my friends and family I had one of my best birthdays ever as I got to celebrate a birthday for the first time in Ukraine. To be honest not much could have been better, importation of a few good Americans not withstanding. Having the queen of birthday party celebrations for a wife, I was ensured a good time of no less than 48 hours of fun.
Jaimee and I spent all of May 8th together, hanging out along the boardwalk, eating dinner at our favorite cafe and shooting a few games of pool. Conveniently May 9th was a national holiday (Victory Day) and we invited our closest friends (orphan kids included) to come with us to the beach and have a litle bonfire and BBQ fun. Sergei, Vanya and I had a good time swimming in the cold, storm tossed Black Sea, causing even the locals to shake their heads. Vanya presided over making an oversized lighter fluid fueled bonfire while Jaimee and Anya set out a great spread of goodies. After getting our fill of the beach we stopped by our friend Oksana's apartment for our first round of tea before heading to our home for birthday cake and best of all, shooting off some awesome fireworks. The holiday crowd in the park at 10 pm happily joined in our merriment, hollering and honking car horns in true Second World fashion as we launched our 25 rocket barrage of fireworks.
I really appreciated all of the text messages and emails from many of you in the U.S. and Ukraine on my birthday, I truly felt your love! Thank you so much!
